Whilst we are utilizing the latest piece of gadget to improve our lifestyle, criminals are finding ways to get to us. Internet is becoming a big playground for criminal activities and a tiniest mistake can end up being an expensive one.
The most common type of internet scam is called phishing, where criminals lure you to legitimate looking websites-typically banks and ask you to enter your details. The details are then used to empty your account and/or steal your identity. I will write a detailed information in phishing and how to stay safe later on, But for now I would like to familiarize you with a new kind of fraud currently in the rise. The target for this type of crime is somebody looking for technical support online. Here's how the scam works.First, the scammer pays a big amount of money to Google or other search engines so that their advertisement appears on top of the search results. To an ordinary eye, it does look like the search result. (See picture) Here, I searched for "apple support" and got the following fruitless (or fruitful) result. Note the red circle? This is what scammers hoping you to ignore because this is not the part of your search result. Instead it is an ad, or short for advertisement. And since this is an advertisement, the search engines can get away with this. And the scammers hope you will dial the freephone number. By displaying freephone number, scammers trick users to believe that they are dialing the legitimate company. Once you dial the number, the " technical assistant" on the other end will ask you to visit a certain website or install a piece of software which allows him to take full control of your computer. After bombarding with technical jargon and running few scary looking programs, the assistant then offers to fix the "issue" for a fixed fee with long term support. The amount can be anything between £100-£200. One of these dodgy companies is called iyogi. Here are few stories I came across. Here's a complaint And another one and another one The list is long. and of course, iYogi is not the only one. There are several other scammers who use the similar ways trick and con you. The golden rule to avoid this is be vigilant when you click a link or dial a number. Here is a list of few steps worth considering.
